Meet Melissa, Edna and Erin
Melissa Johari, Owner and operator of The Couple Wellness Expert
B.A., M.S.W., R.S.W.
Melissa is a Registered Social Worker based in Toronto who has worked with families of all ages and of various racial, cultural and religious backgrounds since 2004, and has been happily married for 13 years. She founded The Couple Wellness Expert, as a therapist who specializes in couples counselling, in early 2012. She is Canadian and is of mixed racial background.
Melissa has her Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Western Ontario, and a Master of Social Work degree from Wilfrid Laurier University. In her studies and in further post-graduate training, she has developed skills in and practices PREP-Enrich premarital therapy, Emotionally Focussed Therapy, Resilience in Marriage therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Brief Solution Focussed Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Internal Systems Theory, Strengths Perspective, Mindfulness Theory, Psychodynamic Therapy, Anti-Oppressive Practice, Relational Life Therapy, and Hypnotherapy.
Melissa believes that each person is unique and does not try to fit the individual or couple to a theory but rather uses an eclectic approach in applying her training, based on your own needs. Melissa takes a holistic perspective, taking into account all areas of your lives: financial, spiritual, physical, emotional, social, vocational, sexual, and environmental. She developed the Relational Wellness Wheel to demonstrate how each of these areas of wellness interacts with your relationship. See Melissa’s “Relational Wellness Wheel” for more information.
Melissa’s comfortable, spacious and welcoming office is in Etobicoke (Toronto), Ontario. Melissa often has her friendly cockapoo therapy dog, Gilli with her.
Melissa is expecting her first child in August 2017, and will be on MATERNITY LEAVE from June 27th until September 2018.
Melissa’s amazing associates, Edna and Erin (see biographies below), will continue her practise in Etobicoke.
Melissa is a Member of the Ontario Association of Social Workers and is a Registered Social Worker with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. Social Work is covered under many extended health benefit plans. It is also a tax deduction when claimed as a medical expense. Melissa is also under the supervision of a Registered Psychological Associate who is a member of the College of Psychologists of Ontario. As such, Melissa’s services are not only covered under Social Work, but also under Psychology, with extended health benefits.
Edna Pereira, Associate of The Couple Wellness Expert
The Couple Wellness Expert is pleased and excited to introduce one of our new associates, Edna! She will be providing mindfulness coaching services to our clients at the Bloor West Homeopathic and Wellness Clinic.
For the past decade she has taken the holistic approach to wellness by helping individuals, couples and families support each other through inclusive activities, holistic nutrition, and healthy lifestyle planning. In addition, Edna assists corporations in supporting employee personal needs and goals through stress-management and mindfulness workshops.
Edna obtained her Life Coaching certification in 2009 to become a Mindfulness Coach with the Certified Coaches Federation. Her desire to effectively work with anxiety and depression inspired her to pursue further studies. As such, she is also currently a Counsellor-in-Training with Yorkville University, and is in the process of obtaining her Masters in Counselling Psychology. Upon her completion of that program in April 2018, she will become a Registered Psychotherapist through the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario.
Her main focus is helping clients through a holistic approach, and focusing on mindfulness through strengths-based coaching. In 2016, Melissa and Edna met for the first time, and felt an immediate connection with their wellness philosophies. They also both share a passion for working with couples. Edna has been successful in creating health and fitness programs for couples, in collaboration with her husband, since 2007.
Edna is trained in the Prep-Enrich program, which is an evidence-based, highly effective premarital program. Read more about it on my blog on this website.
Edna believes in the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit. In 2004, Edna was diagnosed with arterial blood clots, and later was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. She manages her health through a strong mind and body connection. Edna’s personal health journey inspired her help and support others along their journey to better overall wellness.
Edna lives in Mississauga with her husband, and young son. Her passion for what families can do to help each other live happily drives her to work with couples and families.

Mission and Vision
The mission of The Couple Wellness Expert is to improve personal wellness one couple at a time by leading the client on a journey of healing, growth and/or learning.
The vision of The Couple Wellness Expert is to see a greater awareness in the community, the city, and the province of the need to foster healthy relationships from the start. This means parents modelling positive relational skills at home, children learning these skills in school and premarital couples taking workshops and/or doing premarital counselling.
Areas of Specialty
Our main focus is on couples, although our practice also involves work with individuals, families, children and youth. Sometimes there is a combination thereof. For example, if through the therapeutic process, it is discovered that part of the source of conflict for a couple is the relationship between the wife and her parents, some family work may take place. Likewise, if it comes out in our work that the teen son of the couple is causing distress for the couple, then there may be some individual work with the son and family work with all three family members.
That being said, these are the areas of work that we specialize in:
- Premarital counselling
- Couple enrichment and couple retreats
- Couples facing issues of fertility
- Foster parents and adoptive parents
- Abuse in childhood
- Adult children of divorce
- Parenting problems
- Issues of intimacy
- Lack of self esteem or couple esteem
- Stress management
- Improving mind-body connection
- Emotional abuse
- Depression and anxiety
- Holistic health and well-being
